What is clustering? The aim of clustering is defence. If another queen bee invades the hive - for example on her return from a mating flight - or an enemy like a wasp has infiltrated the home, it will be surrounded by large numbers of bees.  They form a thick cluster around the invader, bite into him and kill him with their sting!
