Why does a beekeeper smoke out the hive? Smoke lowers the bees' readiness to sting. The bees' instinct tells them that they can't escape the danger of fire by stinging to defend themselves. So the bees instinctively go and protect their brood. The beekeeper takes advantage of this behaviour to work more calmly in the honeycomb.
